Here’s what others are saying:
Rich, Earthy, Irreverent and oh so Honest If you could put “profound” and “delightful” in the same descriptive sentence it would describe Balancing Act; and it’s author (your new best friend) Adele McDowell. Her musings will cartwheel into your heart and find your big “owies’ before you even know what hit you. If you’re floundering in your own muck to the point that even chocolate doesn’t work I’d advise curling up with “Balancing Act” and getting serious about being not so serious. ‘Uniquely’ Universal; Adele McDowell’s reflections, meditations, and how to’s are poignantly designed to take you into yourself and be pleasantly surprised with a hearty dash of sweet solemnity. Pick it up whenever; open it up randomly and somehow there will be just what you needed at that very moment.
This is girlfriend talk of the very best kind. It’s rich it’s earthy, irreverent and honest and cuts to the core of the matter. You matter; matter doesn’t. Liza Bell, Scottsdale, AZ
Light read, Solid help! Humor may be THE best coping mechanism, and it is the background on which Dr. McDowell paints her magnificently insightful perspectives. She reminds us of some good old common sense advice, like get plenty of sleep and exercise; find a creative outlet and practice relaxation. Then, she completes the advice with meditations that drive reflections on her perspectives home and make them sacred.
“Balancing Act” is light enough for a stressed person to read, and deep and solid enough to do some real good! You don’t wait until you’re injured to buy band aids. Don’t wait until you’re traumatized to get your copy of this book. It’s an excellent resource you’ll want to refer to again and again. Hunt Henion, bestselling author
A great, helpful book Balancing Act is light in tone, solid in its help. You can easily read it cover to cover, or keep it handy and read a topic a day. Once you’re familiar with it, turn to a piece that goes right to your current bugaboo. Also, it has some excellent meditations and exercises. An enjoyable and helpful book! Real lovely, real loving, real smart…and as real as can be Adele McDowell wrote a book anyone could read, anyone should read, and anyone who knew about it would read if they got a chance to…
I recommend you tell everyone you know about this book–so they get a chance to do so, too…
Accessible and yet deeply real, it is a book to read through or linger over; and either way to feel deeply connected to. You cannot read it without feeling that you are known–that she managed to ‘get’ who you are in the places you may have thought no one could possibly know or understand…and that it is–through her genuinely accepting compassion–okay to be who you are and okay to want to be more.
Adele McDowell blends an acute sense of humor with a searingly knowing perception of who we all are and what we need even when we aren’t clear we are needing it… She weaves her talent with words with an evident experience in the language of people and what makes us who we are: what gets us stuck; what makes us tick; what gets us moving; what can give us an even better sense of ourselves and our potential.
She tackles unblinkingly the thorny (and often lonely) issues of self-doubt, spiritual wandering, inner-critics, daily humdrum, secret dreams, and the strive to be more. And she tells you how. Now.
I laughed, I nodded, I chuckled, I paused. I wondered. I thought. I laughed some more.
Who knew self-discovery can be so much fun?
It is a gem of a book and one you would want to read and read and read again…then share with everyone you know. Annie Y., NYC
This book bridges the gap with others about feeling unable to catch up day to day. The writer tells it like we know it, without being morose, but rather upbeat and positive about the conundrum. So, it isn’t just me who has “runaway brain”, I may not be the only 50 something out there waking up one day realizing, my savings account could use some savings.
The humor used is uplifting and the quotes, meditations and reflections are full of substance and simplicity, so they work. I love this author’s writing style and spunk! Balancing may not just be for the tight-rope walkers after all. TPG, Fairfield County, CT
